Beirut Aubade

by Norbert Hirschhorn

Thunderstorms bleached
the pre-dawn sky – by morning
the swollen sea boiled with whitecaps, seagulls’
wings flickering in the sun, while terns
                savaged fish
whipped to the surface.
On shore, the stench of burning trash.
